As a friendly and humorous dentist ,graduated from faculty of dentistry of Chulalongkorn university,i’m sure my best blog is gonna be topics about teeth, cosmetic dentistry and oral care
Let’s talk about the hottest topic in this area right now, teeth whitening and how to decide which treatment is best for you.
Teeth whitening is a dental treatment in the field of cosmetic dentistry
for yellowish teeth or stained teeth.
Adult teeth in many persons will become dark due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous.
Also the effect of antibiotic medications (like tetracycline ).They can stain a child’s teeth if taken by a mother during the second half of pregnancy or by a child who is 8 years old or younger, lead to teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel. This condition is called mottled enamel or mottled teeth.
There are many methods to whiten teeth:
Treating the inside by:
Using chemical agents like hydrogen peroxide in bleaching gel, laser bleaching.
Treating the outside by:
Using dental material to cover the stained as bonding with thin coat of composite material
or doing veneer crown and bridge.
For patients with mottled teeth, your possible best treatment should be using chemical agents. We’ll be talking about this method first.
There are 2 methods of gel bleaching, one with high-concentration gel, another with low-concentration gel.
High-concentration bleaching usually is performed in dental clinic by dentists on 1st visit for teeth whitening treatment.Dentists will apply a high concentration of oxidizing agent to the teeth with thin plastic trays for a short period of time. For about 15–20 minutes, trays will stay on the teeth surface. This procedure will be repeated 2more times then you will be given low-concentration gel to perform the treatment yourself at home for as long as several hours a day for a period of 5 to 14 days.
This treatment of bleaching can produce surprising improvements in the cosmetic appearance of most stained teeth, however tetracycline staining may require prolonged bleaching, as it takes longer for the bleach to reach the dentine layer( the 2nd layer of teeth, under the 1st layer:enamel ).
side effects found most are tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums.
So patients should not try this treatment on their own.
Consultation with dentists is highly recommended for this kind of tooth whitening treatment.
Price for teeth whitening bleaching treatment in thailand is around 10,000baht or 300 dollars but in usa,i believe the cost will be 500dollars or much more.
